Choosing among Chiang Mai international schools is not only an education decision. It is also a daily transport and housing decision.

Start with the curriculum and support your child needs, confirm whether the school can consider an application, then test the journey from realistic home areas at actual drop-off and pickup times. A home that works with the whole school-day routine may be a better fit than one that merely looks close on a map.

Quick summary: Build a school shortlist before committing to a home, but keep two or three housing areas open until you have visited the campuses and tested their routes. Compare schools by programme, year-level entry, language and learning support, admissions process, campus location, school transport and the family's after-school routine. No school or neighbourhood is universally “best.”

This is a non-ranking, non-exhaustive comparison of selected schools. Koolpunt Group is not affiliated with, endorsed by or acting for any school named here.

Curriculum, age placement, admissions, capacity, transport and campus arrangements can change. The school facts and links below were checked against official school sites and programme directories on 3 September 2026. Families should verify them directly with the relevant admissions team before applying or choosing a home.

How to use this guide and verify current school information

Use the table as a way to identify questions, not as a substitute for speaking with admissions. A curriculum label such as “British,” “American,” “IB,” “Cambridge” or “Singapore” does not by itself describe teaching style, subject choices, language support, pastoral care or how a child will be placed after transferring from another system.

A practical sequence is:

  1. Define the child's requirements: age and year level, previous curriculum, languages used for learning, support documentation, preferred graduation pathway and likely length of stay.
  2. Check the official academic pages: confirm the programme at the child's stage, not only the final qualification.
  3. Contact admissions: ask about the required term, records, assessment, placement and current application process. An enquiry, tour or application does not guarantee a place.
  4. Visit the relevant campus: use the exact entrance—not a general brand pin—when testing a route.
  5. Verify transport: ask about bus coverage, stops, supervision, changes and after-activity arrangements.
  6. Then narrow the housing search: include work, daily services and any siblings travelling elsewhere.

Ask for current fee schedules directly from each school. Fees and inclusions change, and a useful family budget must distinguish tuition from application, assessment, enrolment, transport, meals, activities, uniforms, devices, exams and deposits.

This guide does not quote fees because those figures should be checked for the exact academic year and year level.

Compare Chiang Mai international schools by curriculum, age range and location

The schools are listed alphabetically. “Area” describes the official campus address at the verification date; it is not a claim about travel time or a recommendation to live in that district.

Age ranges follow what the school currently publishes. Where a school uses a year or grade policy instead of one numerical range, parents should ask admissions to confirm placement from the child's date of birth and records.

School Curriculum or pathway stated by the school Ages/levels stated Official campus area Location and transport questions to ask
Chiang Mai International School (CMIS) English-language, American-sourced, standards-based K–12 curriculum Preschool 3 (age 3) to Grade 12 (age 17) in CMIS’s published 2026–27 age/grade policy Wat Ket, Mueang Chiang Mai Confirm the arrival/dismissal entrance and whether any transport arrangement serves the candidate address. Start with CMIS’s official application and age/grade policy.
Grace International School (GIS) American-style, college-preparatory Christian education Kindergarten to Grade 12; GIS applies a birth-date policy and publishes separate K–5, 6–8 and 9–12 admissions routes Harn Kaew, Hang Dong GIS says it does not provide home-to-school transport; it notes that families may arrange private transport. Confirm the current arrangement, activity pickup and eligibility through GIS admissions.
Lanna International School Thailand (LANNA) British-style pathway based on the National Curriculum of England, with IEYC in Early Years, Cambridge Primary/IPC in Primary, and Cambridge examination courses in Secondary Ages 2–18; Early Years to Year 13 166 Moo 10, Baan Waen, Hang Dong LANNA’s FAQ lists a school-bus form for Primary and Secondary students “if required”; confirm current route, stop, capacity and activity arrangements through LANNA admissions.
Nakornpayap International School (NIS) U.S. standards-based curriculum; NIS states that it offers Advanced Placement opportunities Early Years ages 3–5; Elementary Grades 1–5, Middle Grades 6–8, and High Grades 9–12 240 Moo 6, San Phi Sua, Mueang Chiang Mai No route or bus availability is assumed here. Confirm the applicable admissions process, exact gate and any transport arrangements with NIS admissions/contact.
Panyaden International School British curriculum and Thai national-curriculum elements in Early/Primary Years; IMYC in Years 7–9; Pre-IB in Years 10–11; authorised IB Diploma Programme in Years 12–13 Ages 2–19 218 Moo 2, Namprae, Hang Dong Confirm the exact campus entrance, current bus coverage, activity transport and assessment timing through Panyaden admissions.
Prem International School Authorised IB continuum: PYP, MYP, DP and CP; day and boarding options Early Years to Grade 12; confirm the child’s year placement with admissions 234 Moo 3, Huay Sai, Mae Rim Ask separately about day-student transport, boarding and activity arrangements; do not treat the day and boarding journeys as equivalent. Use Prem admissions for current application and assessment information.
Singapore International School Chiangmai (SISB Chiangmai) EYFS Nursery–Kindergarten; Singapore curriculum in Primary; Singapore–Cambridge pathway in Secondary; Cambridge International AS/A Levels in Sixth Form Nursery to Sixth Form, ages 2–18 10 Hussadhisawee Road, Sripoom, Mueang Chiang Mai Confirm current bus zones, pickup rules and after-activity arrangements with the campus admissions team; do not infer coverage from the city-centre location.
Varee Chiangmai International School (VCIS) Aligned with the English National Curriculum; IGCSE in Years 10–11 and AS/A Level in Years 12–13 Early Years to Year 13; VCIS asks families to confirm placement through its admissions process 59 Moo 6, Mahidol Road, Nong Hoi, Mueang Chiang Mai Confirm the gate to test, school transport and late-pickup arrangements directly with VCIS admissions. VCIS publishes rolling admissions but restricts entry into some senior years.

This table deliberately does not score academics, facilities, culture or admissions accessibility. Those depend on the child, the year level and current school information.

It also does not include every international or bilingual option in Chiang Mai. Families considering a smaller, specialist, language-specific or newly opened school should apply the same verification framework.

What the curriculum labels do—and do not—confirm

The International Baccalaureate's official directory identifies the programmes for which a school is authorised. It lists Prem for PYP, MYP, DP and CP, while Panyaden's entry lists the Diploma Programme. “IB school” does not necessarily mean every IB programme is offered.

Cambridge International says its stages can be offered separately, so ask which subjects and qualifications apply to the child's year. For an American pathway, ask which standards and diploma apply and which advanced courses run in the relevant year; the College Board AP Course Ledger is the primary directory for checking authorised AP courses.

Family housing checklist: make the school day work at home

Family comparing a school-day route, campus information and after-school activities at home
Family comparing a school-day route, campus information and after-school activities at home

Once two or three schools appear educationally suitable, turn the family's timetable into housing criteria. Start with an ordinary Tuesday, not an ideal weekend.

Morning routine

Work backwards from the required arrival time. Include waking, breakfast, preparation, the pickup point, gate access and the adult's onward journey. If children attend different campuses, map both trips in their real order. At home, look for practical breakfast space and a place for bags, shoes and sports equipment.

Pickup, activities and adult schedules

Compare normal dismissal with clubs or sports. Ask who can collect a child, how pickup changes are recorded and whether transport runs after activities. Do not assume that a normal bus route covers late dismissal.

Learning and recovery space

Check lighting, noise, internet setup, storage and supervision in the study area. Teenagers may need privacy; younger children may work better near shared space. Also preserve time and room for sleep, meals and recreation—a larger home cannot compensate for a routine with little family time.

Security and everyday management

In a gated community, ask how school vans and drivers enter, where children wait, how pedestrian routes interact with vehicles and whom residents contact about problems. Verify the actual rules, staffing and common-area arrangements.

Use Koolpunt's English property overview to see housing options across Chiang Mai. Request current, sales-verified information for any specific project, home, plot, price or facility.

When the school shortlist is stable, use the Chiang Mai house-buying and due-diligence guide to compare candidate homes with the same area, budget, community and document checks. The guide is not a commute estimate or evidence that a property is currently available.

How to test a school commute before deciding

A route test should be repeatable. A single map estimate from an unspecified time is not enough.

This guide does not provide commute times because the result depends on the exact start point, gate, day, weather, school calendar and road conditions.

Use this method for each school–home pair:

  1. Fix the endpoints. Save the candidate home's actual entrance and the school's instructed drop-off gate. Do the same for any bus stop.
  2. Choose representative days. Test on a normal school weekday while the school is in session. Avoid treating a holiday, weekend or special event as typical.
  3. Match the timetable. Leave at the time the family would need to depart, then repeat the pickup-direction journey near normal dismissal. If activities matter, test that later journey separately.
  4. Record the method. Note date, departure time, route, mode, arrival time, parking or gate delay and any unusual condition. Keep app estimates separate from journeys actually driven.
  5. Test a backup. Identify what happens if the usual road is disrupted. A backup is useful only if the driver has checked where it leads and whether it is practical.
  6. Repeat before committing. Compare several observations rather than selecting the fastest result. If using a school bus, obtain current route information from the school because private driving and bus journeys are not equivalent.

The same test should include the adult's next destination. The relevant journey might be home–school–work in the morning and work–school–home in the afternoon, not simply home–school–home.

Build a school-and-housing shortlist

Create one row for every realistic school–home combination rather than keeping separate lists.

Decision field What to record Who must verify it
Child's entry point Proposed year/grade, term, assessment and required records School admissions
Curriculum continuity Current programme, transition issues and senior qualification pathway School academic/admissions team and the family
Learning and language support Support the child needs, what the school can provide and any capacity limits School specialists/admissions
Transport Exact campus/gate, tested routes, bus eligibility, stops and late-activity arrangements Family's route tests and school transport office
Housing fit Bedrooms, study space, morning staging, parking, recreation and community rules Family, property representative and current project documents
Total family routine Work, sibling schools, healthcare, shopping and backup pickup Family
Current costs School fees and inclusions; home price, recurring costs and move-in items School finance/admissions and property sales team

Mark essential conditions first, then compare trade-offs. Remove any combination that fails a non-negotiable educational, transport or household requirement.

When the school options and preferred areas are clear, contact Koolpunt Group in English with a housing brief: target areas, household size, campus, work locations, move date and space needs.

The team can provide current information about Koolpunt housing options; it cannot advise on school suitability, represent a school or guarantee admission.

Frequently asked questions

What areas are near international schools in Chiang Mai?

Campuses are spread across central Chiang Mai and districts including Hang Dong and Mae Rim. “Near” depends on the exact gate and home address, not the district name. Test real routes at school times.

How should families test a school commute?

Use the exact home entrance and school gate on ordinary school weekdays at real travel times. Record and repeat the route. Check bus coverage separately with the school.

Which curriculum is best for a relocating child?

There is no universally best curriculum. Consider the child's current programme, age, language, support needs, expected stay and likely next system. Ask how the school would place the child and support the transition.

Does applying to a Chiang Mai international school guarantee a place?

No. Schools may consider age or year placement, records, assessments, interviews, language readiness, support capacity, priority rules and available seats. Follow the official process and rely only on a written offer and the school's stated enrolment conditions.

Should a family choose the school or the home first?

Identify educationally suitable schools first, but do not commit to a home until admissions status, campus details and daily routes are sufficiently clear. Keep more than one housing area open, test the full family timetable and verify all property facts with the relevant sales team before deciding.
